Giant Tic Tac Toe

I was going to call this post “what I did with the rest of that giant cardboard box,” but I didn’t want to bury the lead.

To recap a long story, I was too lazy to recycle the giant box our new AC unit came in, so it has been sitting in our basement since, oh, August or so. Not long, really.

I finally turned part of the box into pumpkin art, but there was still A LOT of box left. Turns out AC boxes and refrigerator boxes are very similar in size.

Here’s what I made with it:

A giant tic-tac-toe board! How fun is that? Especially if you are 5 years old and in kindergarten and instead of “school” you get to have a “party.” Except we can’t call it a party, we call it Fall Learning Centers. Education first.

Since the occasion was a “fall” learning opportunity, the playing pieces were pumpkins and gourds.

I’m happy to say that only one person picked up a pumpkin and threw it at another kid. Wait. I’m actually not happy about that. On the plus side, my kid wasn’t involved.

This blog post is not an example of how to make a perfect tic-tac-toe board because mine definitely were not perfect or professional. If anything it is a lesson in “know thy audience.” Not one kindergartener mentioned the pencil marks that I didn’t erase or the scribbles that I painted over or the imperfect cuts.

In other words, kindergarteners are AWESOME! They focus on the best things – having fun! Oh, and snack time. They really like snacks.

I’m happy to say that the party Fall Learning Centers went well. The kids loved playing tic tac toe! I’m also happy to report that the rest of THE BOX is now in the recycle can. Bada bing, bada boom!
