Fairy Light Mason Jars (Solar and Battery Powered)

Today, it is my privilege to remind you of the simple joy of fairy light mason jars. It’s not a new concept, but it is one I had forgotten about until recently. In addition, there are not one, but TWO easy ways to light them up yourselves.

First, how this reminder came about in case you don’t like DIY projects. (There’s something for everyone here.)

I was killing time in the lighting aisle at Lowe’s recently because Handy Husband had parked himself in the electrical aisle and I’m pretty sure he was there long enough that folks started mistaking him for an employee. If they offer an employee discount, it might be worth it to become one.

The electrical aisle holds zero interest for me. I know it’s important. I’m a big fan of electricity as evidenced by me killing time in the lighting aisle. On this particular topic, though, I don’t need to know how the sauce is made, so to speak, just that it tastes good.

However, in a plot twist you probably saw coming, the lights powered by wired electricity did not catch my eye that particular day.

The solar-powered, fairy-light hanging lanterns did. (That was a mouthful!)

It’s cute, right? Love the crackle glass.

However, I did not have a place to hang a lantern, nor did I want to spend $15 on one hanging lantern. I did like the idea though.

Surely, there must be a way to make one with things I (and probably you too!) already own.

I realized there are at least two ways. Give me enough time and friends to brainstorm with and I might come up with more.

First, you can make a fairy light mason jar with battery-operated fairy lights. You might have some of these stashed away in your Christmas decor boxes.

The downside of this method is that you have to root through your Christmas decor boxes in the middle of summer. Some of you would rather go to the dentist than have to do that.

The other thing to consider is that the battery-pack that comes with these battery-operated fairy lights might be visible in the daylight if you are using a clear mason jar. This may or may not matter to you. It doesn’t matter much to me, but I like to be thorough with my pros and cons.

Feel free to zoom in and notice the battery-pack in the bottom of these jars.

Second, you can make a fairy light mason jar with solar-powered lids. This right here is a game changer. Some bright bulb invented a solar-powered mason jar lid that has fairy lights already attached to it.

It was not me. I’m suddenly regretting my disinterest in the electrical aisle.

The brilliance of the solar-powered idea is that you don’t have to reach your hand into a mason jar every time you want to turn your fairy lights on. They will come on automatically. Praise be.

You can see how the top of the lids look here.

Lightning round of things to consider:

Do you go outside at night? And if so, do you like ambient lighting? If you answered ‘no’ to either of those questions, thank you for reading this far.

A 3-pack of solar-powered fairy light lids might also be cheaper and last longer than a pack of AAA batteries. Probably depends on the day.

How many fairy lights do you want to cram in your jar? A battery-operated pack of fairy lights may have more lights than the solar-powered lids do.

Do you want to use vessels other than mason jars to create your lights? If so, the lids might not work for you. Also, the solar lids are for regular mouth jars.

How many fairy light mason jars are too many? I have 5 total right now and I don’t think I’ve reached my limit yet.

If you want to hang your fairy light mason jars it is doable. You’d just need some twine or rope, which you probably have in your junk drawer. Look in the back.

Who knew there would be so many decisions?

Last, a fairy light mason jar would make a great gift!

Mother’s Day is right around the corner. This would be a memorable and inexpensive gift to give the moms and mother figures in your life.

Every time it lights up at night, they’ll think of you.

*sob*

I’m not crying, you’re crying!

The solar fairy light mason jars are probably my favorite just for the convenience factor. Even Handy Husband oohed and aahed when they came on, and I don’t think he was simply humoring me. Although, that has been known to happen.

Please note that the solar lids I ordered came in a 3-pack. I only took pictures of two though because I took these pictures about 2 hours after the package arrived on my doorstep (I was excited!) and the third one hadn’t charged yet.

Also, don’t ask me how durable these lids are. I spent $9.99 on them and I haven’t had them long enough to know. The reviews were great though!

Have you been setting up your deck and outdoor spaces for summer? Do you love fairy lights, solar lights, and lanterns as much as I do? Illuminate me with your responses please. Happy Summer!
