Kitchen Refresh Part 5: Backsplash Dilemma
Free time is a precious commodity. Am I right?
That’s why it pains me to think about the amount of time I’ve spent online searching for backsplash inspiration. It really is ridiculous. I’m really surprised I haven’t dreamed about backsplashes since they are top-of-mind lately.
I want a backsplash option that isn’t permanent and isn’t expensive. Shouldn’t be too hard, right?
My first choice was to use Smart Tiles since I’d heard about them from somewhere. I can’t hold the “where” part in my feeble mind. My heart was set on trying out their peel and stick backsplash tiles. It sounded like just my kind of project!
Looks like real tile, right? It’s not!
Well, it also had a really big price tag. I need approximately 30 square feet and that was going to be upwards of $500. Can we all say OUCH?
I’m in the market for something under $100. Under $50 would be even better. Of course, I still want it to look like a $500 backsplash! I do enjoy a good Mission Impossible challenge.
Next was this super cool herringbone beadboard treatment done by the brilliant folks at Farmhouse38. I think I squealed with delight when I saw how clever they made this project look. I’d need to convince Handy Husband to help out though and he hasn’t been sold. Yet.

While browsing at one of my favorite stores, Target, this week I took a closer look at their removable wallpaper. Some removable wallpaper is wipeable and able to be repositioned like contact paper, so I thought that might be a good alternative. I didn’t see anything at Target that would work though. I searched online for other removable wallpaper options and I saw some cool designs, but not cool price tags.
It got me to thinking that if I want a cool, but simple design, I could just paint something and achieve the same effect.
So, in essence, I expended way too much mental energy thinking about this topic and still don’t have the answer. Perhaps the solution will come to me while I’m applying another coat of paint today! The nice thing about this cabinet painting process is that no one wants to help, so I do get some happy and quiet “me” time! Although, generally, I prefer my happy and quiet “me” time to be somewhere that involves a pedicure. Oh, well. I only have 2 more coats of paint to go on the last 6 doors and then I’m done with the painting part. WOOHOO!!
That was fun, but it ended way too quick! Try one of these posts next!
