Scrapbook Paper Flowers – Spring Fireplace Decor

Let’s talk scrapbook paper flowers and all the ways you can use them to decorate your home.

I’m craving the color of spring flowers, but it still looks like winter in New Jersey. So, I do what I often do. Fake it till spring arrives I make it. This time, I used scrapbook paper flowers to decorate my dining room fireplace for spring.

It looks like I’m ready for spring now, doesn’t it?

I still have snow shovels by the front door, but that’s a little detail we don’t need to dwell on.

What you need to make scrapbook paper flowers:

Scrapbook Paper (I used this paper, but you can use any paper you want – even computer paper!)
Scissors
Hot Glue
Pencil
Painter’s Tape or Poster Putty to hang the flowers
A little bit of patience

How to make paper flowers:

Draw a petal template onto a piece of paper. Cut it out and trace around it on the paper you’re using to make your flowers. You’ll likely need 6 – 8 petals per flower, depending on how wide your petals are.

Cut out your petals. Don’t use your mom’s fabric scissors. She’ll get mad.

Pinch one end of each petal together. Use the tiniest dab of hot glue to secure the pinch together. Remove any excess glue that oozes out. Try not to burn your fingers while you do this. Repeat this for all the petals in your flower.

To assemble the flower, put the tiniest amount of hot glue on the TIP of one pinched-together petal and touch it to the TIP of a second pinched-together petal.

I do mean TINY. We’re practicing restraint here.

You’re putting the glue only on the tips because you’re trying to make a nice center circle for your flower. If you glue the petals together on their sides, it’s going to create a weird gap when you try to close the flower up. Then you’ll think this craft is lame. We don’t want that.

I found it easiest to glue the petals together in two groups of four. This gives you two half circles of petals. Then, you can glue the two half circles together. Again, only glue AT THE TIP of the petals and use a sparing amount of hot glue. You’re trying to keep the hot glue discreet.

Now, for those of you who are worried about how structurally sound these paper flowers are, I’ve got you covered.

Carefully pick up your paper flower and hold it vertically as if you were going to hang it on a wall. If it feels a little floppy, like the petals aren’t staying in position, lay the flower upside down. Push two of the petals together so that they are barely touching each other but not overlapping. Add a tiny bit of hot glue in the valley where the petals come together. Hold it until it dries. Repeat as necessary on the other petals. This will give added stability to your flower when it is hung.

To hang the paper flowers on the wall, I used painter’s tape. You could also use poster putty.

I was inspired to make these paper flowers after reading a Country Living article where they used wallpaper to make paper flowers. I don’t have the wallpaper scraps to do that, but it was love at first sight when I discovered a pack of scrapbook paper with gorgeous botanical prints in different colors.

And away I went with the crafting.

I ended up only using seven scrapbook paper flowers on my mantel, but I made about twenty-five!

My original vision was to have the area above the mantel bursting with flowers, but I decided to rein things in and leave some white space.

I know, I know.

This sort of restraint feels weird to me. Who am I right now?

It does take a little bit of patience to make these scrapbook paper flowers if you want to make a bunch of them.

It’s the perfect repetitive craft to do while bingeing your favorite show or podcast.

Ask me how I know.

Now, some of you are probably thinking you don’t have a fireplace or you don’t want to decorate your fireplace this way. Not every idea is for everyone. Case in point – skinny jeans.

What else could you do with scrapbook paper flowers? I’m so glad you asked.

Scrapbook paper flowers en masse would be a fun photo backdrop for a birthday party or baby shower. You could go floor to ceiling with the flowers or create a pretty arch.

If you hang the scrapbook paper flowers more securely on the wall or hang them by string from a ceiling, they would make cute and inexpensive decor for a little girl’s room or a classroom.

Tiny scrapbook paper flowers could be used to make place settings for a fancy brunch.

So many options! I hope these scrapbook paper flowers plant a creative seed in your idea garden.
