Creative Way To Fix a Cracked Wood Bowl

Let me show you a creative way to fix a cracked wood bowl.

If you’re still reading (thanks!), please note that there should have been air quotes around the word fix in that sentence.

There’s no real way that I know of to restore to a baseline of normal a wood bowl that has cracked as badly as mine had. It was barely hanging on.

This cracked wood bowl was a free roadside find, and you can bet I was giddy to have stumbled upon this treasure while on my daily walk.

I can see why someone thought this bowl was unusable and wanted to get rid of it.

It is unusable for many things, but I have a wood bowl collection, and this will be a wonderful addition to my collection.

So, let’s “fix” this cracked wood bowl by making that crack look like an intentional design feature.

The first thing I did was add a little bit of wood glue to the parts of the crack that hadn’t cracked all the way through.

After the glue dried, I drilled six holes on either side of the crack using a 1/8-inch drill bit. The holes weren’t perfectly placed, but I did try to line up the holes on either side of the crack.

Then I cut a piece of leather into a thin strip to make leather cording and threaded it on the biggest sewing needle I own. You can also buy leather cording and it comes in so many gorgeous colors.

After that, all I did was lace my bowl together with the leather cording kind of how you’d lace your shoes. See? Everything you really need to know you learned in first grade.

Make sure that you pull your leather cord together tightly when lacing it because it offers some support to keep the bowl intact.

As you can see in this photo I took that looks like my bowl is in a museum and not on my back porch (ha!), the outside of the bowl is the “finished” side.

I needed an even number of holes so that my pattern ended on the inside of the bowl where I tied the leather cording off and closely trimmed it.

Below you can see where I tied the lacing on the inside of the bowl.

It’s not really noticeable unless you’re taking pictures for a blog post, so I think you’re safe.

Depending on the look you are going for, you could make the laces for the cracked wood bowl with any number of things besides leather cording like twine, yarn, or wire.

Laces made from a braided friendship bracelet would look so neat and add color and texture to the bowl.

There are more possibilities than there are cracked wood bowls! It’s almost a shame.

Do you think the person who gave away this cracked wood bowl would want it back now?

No backsies!

Actually, I might give it back. I love it but the most pleasure for me was in coming up with a creative fix for it.

What do you think of my creative fix for a cracked wood bowl? Would you have grabbed this free roadside find? Let me know! Please leave a comment on this blog post, email us here, or reach out via Instagram or Facebook. It makes me so happy to hear from you!
