Our Deck Is Ready For Summer

It’s almost Memorial Day, the unofficial kick-off to summer in the U.S., and our deck is ready for summer fun!

And by fun, I mean eating. I have my priorities.

Most of our dinners in the summer are eaten on the deck.

Then there are the Double Ds.

Drinks and dessert.

Those are best enjoyed on the deck in the summer too.

We’ll often turn on the party lights and sit on the deck with a drink in hand as the sun goes down and the temperature becomes tolerable pleasant.

New Jersey summers are not to be trifled with. They can be hot, humid, and let’s not forget about the bugs!

The new addition to our deck this year is an outdoor sofa.

There was a day in early spring when I found myself wanting to take a nap in the sunshine. I had just come home from a colonoscopy and I was still freezing cold, which is a side effect some people experience while fasting.

I found myself draped across three of our outdoor dining chairs in an effort to take that nap.

I wasn’t completely uncomfortable but the thought did cross my mind that if I’m old enough to get a colonoscopy, I’m old enough for a proper place to take a nap in the sunshine.

You’re advised not to operate heavy machinery or make major life decisions for 24 hours after receiving anesthesia, but they did not say anything about purchasing an outdoor sofa.

I have zero regrets about the sofa or the colonoscopy. One saves lives and one makes your saved life more comfortable. Win, win.

Another win is the view from our deck.

We own 2 acres but sometimes it feels like 200 hundred because no one lives behind us.

It’s almost as if we have our own park and after living in many places where we were surrounded by neighbors, this view feels like the biggest luxury.

It’s a place we can metaphorically exhale and recharge from the hard parts of life.

So, our deck is ready for summer. Are we?

You betcha!

I feel like we are our best versions of ourselves when we are outside more and that definitely happens in the late spring, summer, and early fall.

P.S. If you follow along on social media you’ll know that after I took these pictures, I decided to refinish our deck boards. I broke up with semi-transparent stain and am now going steady with a solid stain. Life is good and our deck looks brand new.
