My Latest Thrift Store Finds: Part 5

Welcome to another round of My Latest Thrift Store Finds!

We’re on part 5 of this story. How many parts will there be? It is anyone’s guess. As long as there are thrifted treasures to be found and a few bucks in my pocket, I’m there.

I was trying to think of everything in our house that has been thrifted and decided it would just be easier to list the things I’ve purchased new such as mattresses, pillows, bed frames, the couch, recliner chairs in our bedroom, and rugs.

Oh, and 20 years ago I bought the piano new. If I take care of it, it should last another 80 years.

I’m sure there are other things but the vast majority of the decor and seating around here is thrifted.

It takes longer to furnish and decorate a home this way but it will definitely look unique when you’re done!

Well, that little brain exercise was fun. Let’s get to the point of this blog post – my latest thrift store finds.

My Latest Thrift Store Finds: Gigantic Basket

Sometimes the best finds in a thrift store are the ones that aren’t stocked where they are supposed to be.

For instance, this gigantic basket (it’s laundry basket sized) was not in the basket section. It was stashed under a coffee table in the furniture section.

That’s why you have to meander through an entire thrift store before you can declare it a hit-or-miss day.

The basket was $5. I know!! I scored.

My Latest Thrift Store Finds: Brass Damper Hook

The other thing that was $5 was this brass damper hook.

Except, I didn’t know it was a damper hook when I bought it. I just knew it was cool and I’d find a use for it. Perhaps I could use it on one of my fireplaces if they were in working order but for now, it is living its best damper hook life on my peg rail.

Isn’t it pretty?

As a side note, it seems to me that it used to be normal for even the most basic tools that did the most mundane tasks to be of a higher style and quality than what you might buy today. Does it seem that way to you too or am I looking at this issue through rose-colored glasses?

The answer is probably somewhere in the middle.

My Latest Thrift Store Finds: Yarn

Once upon a time, I learned how to do basic knitting. Like all of my interests, I was really into it for 3.5 seconds and then I moved on to something else.

It will come as no surprise that given my track record, I had a scarf sitting unfinished in my pile of craft supplies for at least 5 years. Probably longer.

This winter I decided to finish that scarf but I needed more yarn. My favorite thrift store sells skeins of yarn for $1 or $2. As long as the yarn looks and smells okay, I’m fine with using it for a scarf I may or may not finish.

Kidding. I’m totally going to finish this scarf…eventually.

My Latest Thrift Store Finds: Needlepoint Art

I’m constantly on the lookout for handpainted or handcrafted art for our house.

I picked up this needlepoint art because I thought they were sweet. I wish (but not really because I’m happy with our life stage) that I had a small child’s room to hang them in. However, I like them here on this ledge or I might hang them in the laundry room.

I spent $5 total for the two framed pieces. The frames alone are worth more than that.

I wish I knew who stitched these two scenes and who she or he made them for. I can come up with a wild story in my head, but I’m sure the real story is even better. Or, at least, I hope it is.

My Latest Thrift Store Finds: Fall-Themed Painting

Every few months I change the decor on our dining room fireplace mantel.

That’s partly because I seem to seasonally decorate this mantel. It’s also because I haven’t landed on THE winning combination of decor. It’s a tricky space because of its size and ceiling height.

I branched out a little after finding a fall-themed painting and have finally centered my decor over the fireplace. It’s making me a little twitchy though. I seem to prefer things on this fireplace to be situated off-centered. This particular vignette could definitely use something green too.

Looks like I might be changing things up again soon!
