Adding Magic To Our Deck With String Lights

    June 6, 2022 /

Am I the last person on earth to add string lights to their deck? It kind of feels like it, but I know that’s an exaggeration. Not everyone has a deck or a backyard, so I feel extremely blessed. We’ve spent the last three years working on our outdoor spaces. It occurred to us during the long, cold winter that maybe we should stop and enjoy those outdoor spaces once the weather warmed up. Otherwise, what was the point of all that work? Although the more time we spend enjoying our outdoor spaces the more projects we dream up to tackle. Because that’s what you do when you’re relaxing, right?…

    Black and Blue Outdoor Furniture

    May 24, 2021 /

Our deck is sporting black and blue outdoor furniture. Did that sentence make it sound like our outdoor furniture rumbled after school? While most of our outdoor furniture is second-hand and was in rough shape when I found it, it is looking decidedly better after a little spray paint session. I’ve also done some outdoor furniture switching around in an effort to only keep the things we use. There will be a quiz at the end, so pay attention. To that end, the table in this below picture from October 2020 was set out by the side of the road and now has a new home. It came with the…

    Faux Copper Metal Awning

    October 14, 2020 /

If I can’t have a real copper awning, I’m going to try my best to create a faux copper metal awning. I’m not 100% convinced I nailed it. However, I am 100% convinced that the metal awning over our small side deck looks better than when I embarked on this project. That counts for something, right? For reference, this side deck is right off the porch where we built my favorite shelves of all time for drink storage. Here’s how the metal awning started out. Quite frankly, the metal awning looked and sounded a little worse for wear. By “worse for wear” I mean it was an eyesore, especially after I…

    Finally, The Deck is Done

    October 7, 2020 /

Ding dong, our deck with black railing is finally done! I’ve only been waiting months to say that. While house projects sometimes feel like our full time job, they aren’t! That’s why they take a real life amount of time to complete. Although, this deck project took an extraordinarily long time to finish – even for us – due to factors out of our control. As it turns out, there was a pressure-treated lumber shortage in our part of the U.S. due to the work stoppages caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. But nobody told us that before we started ripping up the old deck! Oops. We might have put off…

    Plan to Makeover Our Decks

    June 10, 2020 /

We have short and long-term plans for our Colonial Farmhouse. That timeframe is especially relevant when it comes the plan to makeover our decks. Yes, there are two of them. In the short-term, which is this summer, I want to make them safe (that’s kind of important) and improve their visual appeal (also important). In the long-term, I want to burn them to the ground. Woah. That was harsh. I don’t literally want to burn them to the ground. I want to replace them. We are hoping that, in the short-term, by fixing some dry rot and protecting the wood on the decks we can eek 3 – 5 more…
