Pottery Barn Inspired Farmhouse Bed – Update One Year Later

Last year we made a Pottery Barn Knock-Off Farmhouse Bed. It still makes my heart go pitter-patter. Now that we’ve moved (more on that when I can find my camera cord), I thought it would be a good time to update you on the “state of the bed” and what we’ve learned. It’s actually a couple of months shy of being a full year since we made this bed. I mentioned at the time of my original post that this bed is made of all wood and is heavy. I cannot emphasize the word HEAVY enough here. If you EVER plan on moving again, please take this into account before…

    Moving! Again.

Oops, we did it again… That’s right! We are currently knee deep in moving. A couple of weeks ago I was feeling a little bored. Yeah, well. Not so much now. The “pretty” part of A Pretty Happy Home? Well, it’s not so pretty right now. The “pretty happy” part of A Pretty Happy Home? It’s jumping off the charts ecstatic! While I could do without the physical exertion part of moving, I actually do enjoy the process, the possibility, the adventure. It’s fantastic! We aren’t moving far, just about a mile down the road. This happens to be a really good thing since we realized at 8 p.m. on…

    State Appliquéd Dish Towels

My mother-in-law’s birthday is coming up and I wanted to get her something special. I started brainstorming and came up with…nothing. Oh boy. After that bit of anticlimactic brainstorming, I knew it was time to call in reinforcements! My friend, Laura, has an Etsy shop, One Blue Eye Birdie. I love what she creates, especially the state appliquéd pillows. I just couldn’t figure out how to work one into my current decor. Clearly, my life has huge problems. (sarcasm alert) If you are my mother-in-law, you should probably stop reading now. Birthday spoilers ahead! That’s when inspiration hit me over the head. What if I begged and pleaded asked her to make state appliquéd…

    Free Lego Magazine

2018 Update: The Lego Magazine is now called Lego Life. It is still free and you can subscribe to it here.  A few months ago I was at a friend’s house and saw a Lego Club Magazine on their coffee table. I leafed through it thinking my kids would love to receive something like this. Then she told me it was free. Shut the front door! Free is a magic word around here, folks! I jumped on that deal faster than my kids will pick up a piece of candy off the ground. My 4-year-old now receives Lego Club Junior and my 7-year-old receives the Lego Club version, which is geared for older kids.…

How Did I Not Know This? Bed Sheet Labels

I have changed bed sheets countless times in my life. I would try and figure out how many times, but that would be too depressing. I mean, really, it’s not my favorite chore on the planet. Because I am a creature of habit and routine, I wash sheets every Sunday. Go ahead, be jealous over the glamorous life I lead. I can wait while you deal with this rash of emotions. My husband and I share a king-sized bed. Earth-shattering, I know. On Sunday, per every other Sunday, I was putting clean sheets on our bed. The length and width dimensions on a king-sized bed are fairly similar, so sometimes I…

Homemade Girl Scout Cookie Thin Mint Ice Cream

If only those Girl Scout cookies weren’t SO good. It would make it much easier to say “no” to the little girls coming around our neighborhood selling those hard-to-resist creations. In case you’re a Girl Scout with cookies and treats to sell, I haven’t said no yet! By the way, I’ve been extremely impressed thus far with how articulate and composed these young girls have been. Even at 6 and 7 years old they are demonstrating impressive poise and responsibility. I was not a Girl Scout. Hmm…could explain a few things. 😉 I mentioned in this post that we recently became the proud new owners of an ice cream making machine. This…

    Leprechaun Punch

I like any excuse to use food coloring. There. I said it. So, of course, St. Patrick’s Day is the perfect day for me to unleash my arsenal of green food coloring. My kids go wild for all of our green concoctions! And, I like to play it cool, but I love it too! This year I’ll be serving up a tall glass of Leprechaun Punch for the kids. It’s super easy to make. (You could definitely make this in large punch bowl if you were serving a crowd.) All I did was color a glass of Sierra Mist with green food coloring and then added a dollop of lime sherbet…

    Around These Parts

I haven’t done a “what’s happening” post for the family in awhile, so if you’re not one of the 1.7 people out there who cares about my iPhone photos…come back next time! Last week school was cancelled twice. I’m not exactly sure why other than the threat of inclement weather. Funny thing, though. We had no inclement weather those days. Dry and cold, no moisture surrounding the school hours. Tuesday of this week we woke up to snow! Yes, folks everywhere but here, I realize a dusting of snow is a joke, but in Georgia even a small amount can cause a big problem. Oh, and the kids had school that…

    Chewy Swedish Gingersnap Cookies

I sometimes find myself sucked into the online abyss of food pictures and recipes. There are so many gifted cooks out there! They can pair ingredients like nobody’s business and they always seem have some sort of fresh herb on hand for garnish. Garnishes don’t happen here. 4 and 7-year-olds simply do not appreciate them. Kids these days! Often this online recipe hunt is a half-hearted attempt to get out of a dinner rut. I’m not really sure what’s wrong with having tacos 5 nights a week, but my family seems to want variety. The nerve! Other times I’m just wondering what I can make out of the random ingredients in my fridge…

    No-Sew Embellished Canvas Tote

Do you have one of those friends that has known you longer than you’ve been with your spouse or partner? I do. She’s pretty darn special to me. We don’t talk or see each other nearly as often as I’d like, but I know she’d be there for me in a heartbeat. A few months ago she called and told me about her new job. What impressed me the most is not that she had landed a new job (she’s talented and smart), but her attitude about her new job. She, in essence, told me that she’d finally come to the realization that she needed to stop undermining her value and…
